The mission of ArtsCorpsDetroit is to contribute actively to the revitalization of the City of Detroit by engaging Wayne State University students and community volunteers in projects that enrich the city and empower its population through the arts.
Inspired by the Peace Corps, ArtsCorpsDetroit provides a conceptual and organizational framework to facilitate volunteerism in the arts as a strategy to enhance individual growth, enrich the community, and contribute to the social and economic sustainability of Detroit.
ArtsCorpsDetroit uses four strategies to reach its goals:
ArtsCorpsDetroit collaborates with Wayne State University to offer WSU students a variety of credit-generating, service-learning courses that combine classroom experience with community-based learning in the arts.
ArtsCorpsDetroit provides services (e.g., recruitment, orientation, project coordination) to engage a broad corps of volunteers in projects in partnership with artists, organizations and citizens’ groups throughout Detroit.
ArtsCorpsDetroit sponsors occasional public programs focusing on community based, participatory arts initiatives and exploring the power of the arts to catalyze individual and social change.
ArtsCorpsDetroit supports and encourages scholarly research addressing the effectiveness of the arts in promoting personal growth and organizational and community change.
